Lessons about Writing

Bloganuary day 29

Today’s Prompt: What is something you learned recently?

What a great question! I am probably what is known as an epistomophile as I am constantly reading and absorbing information. This is a great opportunity to take a step back and think about about what I have actually learnt and how much I have implemented. After all, as Dale Carnegie says: “Knowledge isn’t power until it is applied.”

The value of morning pages

If you have read “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron then you would have come across the term “morning pages”. Julia Cameron recommends that, every morning, we get up and write out 3 pages of conscious streaming writing by hand. It is a clearing exercise that allows you to dump all the thoughts that are rolling around in your mind. I find that it is easier to meditate after writing these pages as I have now dealt with all the thoughts that usually pop up in my writing. I also often find that by the 3rd page (although I don’t always get there), I start coming up with new ideas, especially for work, which is pretty awesome. There is no right or wrong way to do this exercise and it is often a grump fest and can look like a to-do list. It’s a really great tool that helps you create space for your creativity.

How to easily calculate the readability of my text

This is I learnt today on Tetyana’s blog, #teachisfun, here on WordPress. You can find out more about to do this too at this link. I have always wanted to understand how to calculate the readability score of my blog posts as I am aware of how important it is but I have never taken the time to find out. Tetyana’s post also taught me about important rules that need to be followed for the best chance of creating a successful blog and includes very useful tips on creating a captivating heading for my posts. I suspect I am going to need a lot more practice with headings in particular. 😅

That’s it for today. Thanks for stopping by. Bye for now.

Cake is for life, not just for birthdays!

Bloganuary day 28 – just 3 more posts to go….

Today’s prompt: Describe your perfect birthday cake

Hello again. I don’t know about you but I thought this a bit of an odd prompt but here I am anyway. I have never given any thought to what my perfect birthday cake would be like to be honest. This is probably because I have never been too hung up on it.

We were very fortunate that my mother was the best baker ever! On Sunday evenings we did not have supper. Instead we had cake. My mum would bake at least 2 treats every week. Sometimes it would be scones and a bacon and egg quiche or chocolate cake and rock cakes. Sometimes it would be lemon meringue pie and maybe a coffee cake or cheese puffs. I guess my point is that we were spoilt rotten on Sundays and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We couldn’t wait until it was time for cake and coffee/tea. If you were still hungry there after, you had a toasted sandwich. Those are definitely some of my favourite moments with my family.

I think I always had a chocolate cake on my birthday. It was never fancy but it was always delicious because it was made with love. I really couldn’t ask for more. I’ll assume my mum is reading over my shoulder from the other side so thank you Mummy for those weekly spoils and my delicious birthday cakes. They were always appreciated. 🌷🙏To this day, a chocolate cake is still my cake of choice if I am going to have one at all.

That’s it from me. Thanks for stopping by. Bye for now.

I love the Sound of Deadlines as They Go Swooshing By

Today’s prompt: what are the pro’s and cons of procrastination

Well…as the queen of procrastination, I am certainly qualified to answer that question I think 🙈😂. Let’s start with the pros.

One of the main pros is that my house is never cleaner than when I find myself procrastinating about studying or writing a report in particular. While I am busy cleaning, my brain also gets a chance to think through some things especially if a report is due. Another pro is that I might find that if I leave some tasks for long enough, when I am eventually ready to start, the task is no longer required because circumstances have changed.

A key con is that I stress yourself out about a pending deadline but I continue to procrastinate anyway until the last second. It’s like I am paralysed and can only be released just before the deadline. I don‘t do my best work because everything is now done in a hurry. Procrastination is often just a form of self-sabotage. Well for me anyway. I do it when I am super nervous about how something will turn out.

Do you have any pros or cons to add? That’s it from me. Bye for now.
